Chief Characteristics of Commercial Vehicles
When determining whether you need a commercial vehicle or if the vehicle you’re currently driving should be classified that way, it’s important to keep in mind the following aspects that set a commercial vehicle apart:
- Any vehicle designed to hold 15 people or more must be labeled a commercial vehicle.
- A vehicle being used to carry equipment that has had all its seats other than those in the front permanently removed is a commercial vehicle.
Remember: An automobile that fits either of the above conditions must have commercial plates.
Weight also plays a factor in classifying commercial vehicles. There are eight different classes. These are listed below along with their corresponding gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).
- Class 1: 0 to 6,000 pounds
- Class 2: 6,001 to 10,000 pounds
- Class 3: 10,001 to 14,000 pounds
- Class 4: 14,001 to 16,000 pounds
- Class 5: 16,000 to 19,500 pounds
- Class 6: 19,501 to 26,000 pounds
- Class 7: 26,001 to 33,000 pounds
- Class 8: 33,001 pounds and higher
